All around the world, martial arts movies seem to be getting more popular every year.  There have been many legendary films made long ago that still gain new viewers even in modern times.

Today’s martial arts movies have certainly improved in quality, with better special effects and technology available, but the classics are still worth owning.  You can even find some rare editions on DVD and Blu Ray as well by searching online.

Netflix has many of these available for rent and they even offer direct streaming to your computer or television.  This is a great way to check out movies before you purchase them.

Let’s now look at some of the best ways to start your martial arts movie experience.

Bruce Lee And The Classics

Without a doubt, every martial arts movie collection has to begin with at least a few gems from the master.  Of course, I am speaking about Bruce Lee!.

He is often referred to as the greatest martial artist of all-time, and he broke box office records when he began his film career in the early 1970’s.

Some of his best movies to add to your collection are:

  1.  Enter The Dragon- Widely regarded as perhaps Bruce Lee’s best movie! It has an easy-to-follow plot and some kick-ass fight scenes.
  2.  Fist Of Fury- A very dark film featuring a brutal ending, lots of good action though!
  3.  Way Of The Dragon- Lee directed this film himself and he kind of gets away from the darker aspect of his previous movies.

There are also “Game Of Death,” “The Big Boss,” “Way Of The Dragon,” and others that might be worth checking out.

Must Have Movies

Enter The Dragon

While some might argue that the choice should be The Chinese Connection, we simply can not choose Enter the Dragon. Is this the biggest tale ever told?.  Does Bruce Lee have a large number of evil-doers to destroy? Yes. Yes. It’s just great for that alone.

Some Martial art fans may or may not agree that his biggest film is Enter the Dragon. The dragon is one of those films that has become the legend, namely the huge 1973 box office smash and the most popular film from the unrivaled superstar of martial arts that died the summer before its release.

This was the first Chinese martial arts movie to be made in partnership with Lee’s Concord Production Inc. by a leading Hollywood studio, Warner Bros.

Ip Man

Ip Man is one of the greatest martial arts movies we’ve ever seen and  is a 2008 Hong Kong biographical martial arts film based on the life of Yip Man, Wing Chun’s martial art grand master and Bruce Lee’s master.

The fighting scenes in Ip Man are so devastatingly amazing, you’ll want to begin training in Wing Chun as quickly as the credits roll.

As Donnie Yen plays, Bruce Lee’s mentor is soft-spoken, kind, and insane bad-ass when it comes to fighting.

This is  a must watch movie not just because of the excellent fighting scenes, but it’s also an exciting historical to look at Ip Man’s world, how he lived and what life was like in Southern China in the 1930’s.

Kung Fu Hustle

Generally speaking, Martial Arts motion pictures don’t have to be dead serious, they don’t have be realistic. This movie won’t be confused for a Bruce Lee epic.  Kung-Fu Hustle is so absurdly absurd you almost forget how amazing the fighting is.  The film was the United States ‘ all-time fifth highest-grossing foreign language movie as well as the country’s highest-grossing foreign language movie in 2005. Kung-Fu Hustle has earned countless accolades, including six Hong Kong Film Awards and five Golden Horse Awards.

DVD And Blu Ray Sources

As I mentioned above, Amazon is a great source for finding DVD’s and Blu Ray editions of many classic martial arts movies. They also have some combo packages available that can save you money.

This is a good place to start your collection.

You can also search on Ebay to locate tons of sellers offering new and used copies of classic martial arts movies. Just be sure and check the reviews to see if the seller is highly rated and trustworthy.

Additionally check out MoviesUnlimited.com, where you can search for movies by the name of the martial artist starring in them.  Other great places to source DVDs are:

There you have it, you should now have enough information to get you started on your collection.  Once you start collecting them you won’t want to stop. There is a vast amount of movies out there and some rare ones too.  I own over 200+  even though we can watch them on Netflix,  I still enjoy having physical copies, it’s like owning a piece of history.
